Verdict
The clearest difference is rating: Black Box at 4.5 against RoleTine's 1.0. Black Box also leads on in-app purchases (none vs 1) and update cadence (every 3 days vs every 2 months). RoleTine's advantage is review sentiment (82% vs 67%). On price, ads, device support and iOS requirement there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. RoleTine sells 1 one-off in-app purchase. Black Box asks for nothing beyond the download.
Black Box holds the better App Store score, 4.5 against 1.0. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Black Box has 44 ratings behind it against 1, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 82% of RoleTine's written reviews are positive against 67% of Black Box's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.
RoleTine ships an update every 2 months, Black Box every 3 days. The most recent releases landed on November 1, 2026 and November 4, 2026 respectively.
