Verdict
The clearest difference is ads: New Scientist at none against Science Now's shown. New Scientist also leads on review sentiment (69% vs 43%) and ratings volume (5.7K vs 140). Science Now's advantage is iOS requirement (15.0 vs 17.0). On price, update cadence, in-app purchases and monetization model there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Science Now sells 3 in-app purchases, starting at $0.99 per month and New Scientist sells 11 in-app purchases, starting at $9.99 per month. Whichever you choose, the download price is not the number that matters.
New Scientist holds the better App Store score, 4.8 against 4.6. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: New Scientist has 5.7K ratings behind it against 140, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews point the same way: 43% of Science Now's written reviews are positive against 69% of New Scientist's.
Science Now ships an update every 3 months, New Scientist every 2 months. The most recent releases landed on October 23, 2026 and November 1, 2026 respectively.
