The leading review of the arts and intellectual life. Download for a FREE sample issue. The New Criterion is a monthly review of culture and the arts edited by Roger Kimball. Founded in 1982 by the art critic Hilton Kramer and the pianist and music critic Samuel Lipman, The New Criterion began as an experiment in critical audacity, a publication devoted to engaging, in Matthew Arnold's famous phrase, with "the best that has been thought and said." Harry Mount in the Daily Telegraph of London has called The New Criterion "America's leading review of the arts and intellectual life" Julian Symons, in the Times Literary Supplement, writes that "As a critical periodical, The New Criterion is probably more consistently worth reading than any other magazine in English." Published monthly from September through June, The New Criterion brings together a wide range of young and established critics whose common aim is to bring you the most incisive criticism being written today. CoKnit focuses on practical “how to do” guidance—how to cast on, knit, purl, increase, decrease, and read pattern instructions as you work. You’ll move naturally from basic stitches to finished projects, building confidence stitch by stitch. Beginner-Friendly Stitch Videos See exactly what your hands should do. Learn essential knitting stitches and techniques such as knit stitch, purl stitch, ribbing, stockinette, and simple shaping. Needle placement, yarn movement, and tension are shown clearly, so you can follow along without decoding abbreviations or guessing. Knitting Patterns You Can Actually Follow Choose projects that fit your skill level and your mood. Explore a growing collection of knitting patterns, from quick, satisfying projects like scarves, hats, and mittens to more involved makes. Each pattern is structured to help you understand the process, not just copy steps. Identify Stitches and Pattern Details Stuck on a stitch or an unclear instruction? CoKnit helps you recognize knitting stitches and pattern structures from references or tutorials, making older or less beginner-friendly patterns easier to understand. When a pattern skips explanations, CoKnit fills in the gaps. Why Knitters Love CoKnit CoKnit is built for knitters who value the rhythm and comfort of handcraft. Verdict

The call

The clearest difference is monetization model: CoKnit at freemium against The New Criterion's subscription. The New Criterion's advantage is rating (4.7 vs 4.4) and ratings volume (362 vs 37). On price, review sentiment, ads and in-app purchases there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. The New Criterion sells 26 in-app purchases, starting at $3.99 per month and CoKnit sells 3 in-app purchases, starting at $29.99 per year. Whichever you choose, the download price is not the number that matters.

ReceptionRating · Positive reviews · Number of ratings

The New Criterion holds the better App Store score, 4.7 against 4.4. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: The New Criterion has 362 ratings behind it against 37, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 44% of The New Criterion's written reviews are positive against 50% of CoKnit's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.
