Verdict

The call

The clearest difference is review sentiment: eMPendium at 82% against MedCalX's 46%. eMPendium also leads on in-app purchases (none vs 3) and iOS requirement (13 vs 17.0). MedCalX's advantage is rating (3.8 vs 3.4) and ratings volume (31 vs 5). On price, update cadence, ads and device support there is nothing between them.

ReceptionRating · Positive reviews · Number of ratings

MedCalX holds the better App Store score, 3.8 against 3.4. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: MedCalX has 31 ratings behind it against 5, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 82% of eMPendium's written reviews are positive against 46% of MedCalX's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.

UpkeepUpdate frequency

eMPendium ships an update every 3 months, MedCalX every 5 months. Both last shipped on October 24, 2026.
