Verdict

The call

The clearest difference is review sentiment: SGSecure at 70% against Google News's 19%. SGSecure also leads on ads (none vs shown) and monetization model (free vs free with in-app purchases). Google News's advantage is rating (4.6 vs 3.4) and ratings volume (226K vs 15). On price, update cadence, in-app purchases and device support there is nothing between them.

ReceptionRating · Positive reviews · Number of ratings

Google News holds the better App Store score, 4.6 against 3.4. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Google News has 226K ratings behind it against 15, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 19% of Google News's written reviews are positive against 70% of SGSecure's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.

UpkeepUpdate frequency

Google News ships an update monthly, SGSecure every 6 weeks. The most recent releases landed on October 18, 2026 and October 9, 2026 respectively.
