Verdict
The clearest difference is review sentiment: Pre at 67% against ACT Math's 0%. Pre also leads on ratings volume (357 vs 6) and update cadence (every 6 months vs every 12 months). ACT Math's advantage is monetization model (free vs free with in-app purchases) and rating (5.0 vs 4.7). On price, ads, in-app purchases and device support there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Pre sells 1 in-app purchase, starting at $9.99 per month and ACT Math sells 1 one-off in-app purchase. Whichever you choose, the download price is not the number that matters.
ACT Math holds the better App Store score, 5.0 against 4.7. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Pre has 357 ratings behind it against 6, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 67% of Pre's written reviews are positive against 0% of ACT Math's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.
Pre ships an update every 6 months, ACT Math every 12 months. The most recent releases landed on October 2, 2026 and October 15, 2026 respectively.
