Verdict

The call

The clearest difference is ads: Cuneiform Edit at none against Symbol Keyboard's shown. Cuneiform Edit also leads on monetization model (free vs ad-supported) and iOS requirement (12.0 vs 15.0). Symbol Keyboard's advantage is update cadence (every 2 weeks vs every 14 months) and ratings volume (7.3K vs 27). On price, review sentiment, in-app purchases and device support there is nothing between them.

ReceptionRating · Positive reviews · Number of ratings

Symbol Keyboard holds the better App Store score, 4.6 against 4.3. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Symbol Keyboard has 7.3K ratings behind it against 27, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 78% of Symbol Keyboard's written reviews are positive against 85% of Cuneiform Edit's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.

UpkeepUpdate frequency

Symbol Keyboard ships an update every 2 weeks, Cuneiform Edit every 14 months. The most recent releases landed on October 23, 2026 and October 24, 2026 respectively.
