Scientifically validated as a highly effective approach to improving spelling skills through our phonics approach. A published study revealed that students demonstrated an average spelling improvement of 1.9 grades among children in a classroom setting who regularly used Simplex Spelling over a 18 week period. The largest student improvement observed over the same time period was 4.4 grade levels as assessed by administering the Schonell Spelling Test. Linda Chmiliar, "Improving the Spelling Skills of Students with Learning Disabilities using Apps on the iPad", International Journal of Technology and Inclusive Education, pp. 962-971. Special Issue Volume 3, 2016. Simplex Spelling Phonics 1 teaches a full year of spelling curriculum with over 450 high frequency words divided into 42 lists that are organized by spelling patterns and difficulty levels. Each of the 42 lists comes with a lesson that teaches one of the basic building blocks of spelling in the English language. These basic building blocks include the different phonograms, sounds, and spelling rules. Our spelling lists focus on some of the highest frequency words in the English language to help students establish a base foundation of literacy and confidence with spelling and reading. Students learn a new concept for each lesson building on the skills learned from previous lessons. Simplex Spelling Phonics 1 guides the student and acts as a personal spelling coach with every word, while teaching "how to spell" English words. Memorization may be sufficient to pass a spelling test, but it often does not transfer into good long term reading and spelling skills. Our goal with Simplex Spelling Phonics 1 is to not only teach a list of words, but to teach students “how to spell” these words, thus building long term skills that can be used for over 84% of the words in the English language that follow phonetic patterns. Many studies show that students who learn to read through phonics have a higher level of literacy than students who learn to read by using flash cards and the whole word approach. Also, that not all readers are good spellers, but almost all good spellers are also good readers. This is why Simplex Spelling's comprehensive unique phonics approach to spelling really works to create both better spellers and better readers. Note: Now supports both North American and British accents.

Squeebles Punctuation is the latest addition to the chart-topping Squeebles series, designed in association with school teachers. Suitable for ages 5 - 11, the app allows children to practice all aspects of punctuation. Help rescue the Squeebles from the clutches of the nasty Grammar Ghost and Punctuation Pest, the latest mean villains to cause havoc on Squeeble Island. By answering punctuation questions across four different game modes, children will have fun earning rewards and rescuing 24 Squeeble characters. The four game modes are: > Punctuation Placement - move punctuation into the correct places, across a wide variety of sentences. Children can choose from 5 categories of punctuation: - Full stops and capital letters - Question marks and exclamation marks - Commas - Colons, commas and semi-colons - Speech marks > It's or Its - muddling up the possessive "its" and the contraction "it's" is easily done and leads to frequent confusion. This game mode allows children to assess context within a sentence and fill in any blanks with the appropriate its/it’s. > Possessive Apostrophes - drag apostrophes into the correct places, being mindful of whether the subject matter is singular or plural (i.e. the boy’s apples or the boys’ apples). Beginners are given pictorial clues, while those using advanced levels are shown text-based pointers. > Contraction Capers - give the correct contraction for the given phrase (i.e. you have = you’ve). Features all common contractions in US English. Most game modes offer various difficulty levels and the app is set up to allow younger children to start with the very basics of punctuation, such as full stops and capital letters, before moving on to more complex ideas and concepts. Frequent rewards are given for answering questions correctly, which incentivises children to continue practicing. Rewards include: earning turns on a fun mini-game, where children race a hot air balloon across the ocean; winning 24 new Squeebles characters (including those designed by our latest competition winners); and earning stars, which can be traded for balloons to use in the balloon racing game. A password-protected Parent/Teacher Zone includes a stats section, which allows you to see progress by all children using the app. This includes 28 days of detailed stats, showing scores, any questions that have been answered and any incorrect answers, so that you can identify if the same types of mistakes are consistently being made. Unlimited children can be registered with the app and, as with all our apps, there are no in-app purchases, no advertising and no internet links of any kind. Verdict

The call

The clearest difference is review sentiment: Squeebles Punctuation at 100% against Simplex Spelling Phonics 1's 81%. Squeebles Punctuation also leads on update cadence (every 2 months vs every 5 months) and iOS requirement (8.0 vs 15.0). Simplex Spelling Phonics 1's advantage is rating (4.0 vs 3.8) and ratings volume (23 vs 4). On price, ads, in-app purchases and monetization model there is nothing between them.

Simplex Spelling Phonics 1 holds the better App Store score, 4.0 against 3.8. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Simplex Spelling Phonics 1 has 23 ratings behind it against 4, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 81% of Simplex Spelling Phonics 1's written reviews are positive against 100% of Squeebles Punctuation's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.
