MIDI Designer Pro X (MDPx) is the culmination of over a decade of improvement. We launched MIDI Designer Pro in 2012 and relaunched it in 2016 as MIDI Designer Pro 2. MDP2 was the first and only professional-grade MIDI controller built natively for iOS, earning critical acclaim. Since launch, over 80 updates have greatly expanded its capabilities. Our user-created library now covers 375+ MIDI targets across music hardware and software. In 2024, MDPx took a significant leap forward with the expressive "Spaceship" theme on iPad and Mac and major iPhone usability advances. It now adds AUv3 support in hosts such as AUM, Cubasis, and Logic. A new subscription model — Premium — allows even more users to use the App in their music-making and discover the App Store's best MIDI controller for themselves. Knob Lab turns your iPhone or iPad into a MIDI controller built around one idea: a single knob can do many things at once. ONE KNOB. MANY MOVES. Map a knob to up to 8 MIDI destinations. Each has its own range, direction, channel and color, so one turn can open a filter, pull the resonance back and bring the delay in over the second half of the sweep. BUILD YOUR OWN MACROS • Control Change, Program Change and Pitch Bend destinations • Name every knob and every destination, so a setup reads at a glance • Invert any range, or start a destination part-way through the turn • Rotate completely, snap to middle, pan left/right, or return to origin on release • A colored lane for every destination shows where each one is A LAYOUT FOR EVERY SETUP Start with one big knob, or unlock layouts with 2, 6 or 12 knobs on a single screen. PLAYS WITH EVERYTHING • Music apps on the same device, through Knob Lab's virtual MIDI output • Computers over Wi-Fi, with a network MIDI session • A Mac over USB or Bluetooth, with Sonic Logic Central • Class-compliant USB MIDI interfaces and synths plugged into your iPhone or iPad MADE FOR TOUCH Large, precise knobs, a quick guided start, Dark, Light and Neon themes, and full support for iPhone Duo in portrait and landscape. The one-knob layout is free. The 2, 6 and 12 knob layouts are in-app purchases, available one at a time or all together.

Verdict
The clearest difference is update cadence: MIDI Designer Pro X at every 5 days against Knob Lab's every 4 months. MIDI Designer Pro X also leads on rating (4.6 vs 4.2) and ratings volume (272 vs 13). Knob Lab's advantage is iOS requirement (15.0 vs 18.6). On price, review sentiment, ads and in-app purchases there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. MIDI Designer Pro X sells 9 in-app purchases, starting at $1.49 per month and Knob Lab sells 4 one-off in-app purchases. Whichever you choose, the download price is not the number that matters.
MIDI Designer Pro X holds the better App Store score, 4.6 against 4.2. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: MIDI Designer Pro X has 272 ratings behind it against 13, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 79% of MIDI Designer Pro X's written reviews are positive against 85% of Knob Lab's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.
MIDI Designer Pro X ships an update every 5 days, Knob Lab every 4 months. Both last shipped on November 6, 2026.
