American Atheists is America’s premier nonprofit organization by and for atheists. Our quarterly magazine is packed with news, articles, and essays not found on the website. Here you’ll find in-depth stories about our current legal battles, celebrity interviews, book excerpts and reviews, and articles about all aspects of atheism, including the challenge of coming out as a nonbeliever. Besides the total separation of church and state, American Atheists fights for the civil rights on nonbelievers, including the right to exist openly without stigma. These pages feature people’s true stories of coming out, as well as advice and motivation to get out of the closet if you feel trapped in it with no way out. You’ll also enjoy highly readable pieces by scholars who offer examples upon examples of historical facts that prove American was not founded as a Christian nation. ---------------- Paid-for application downloads include one issue of the user’s choice. Verdict
The clearest difference is rating: Edinburgh Live at 4.9 against American Atheist Magazine's 2.9. Edinburgh Live also leads on update cadence (monthly vs every 17 months) and monetization model (ad-supported vs free with in-app purchases). American Atheist Magazine's advantage is ads (none vs shown) and iOS requirement (10.0 vs 15.0). On price, review sentiment, ratings volume and in-app purchases there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. American Atheist Magazine sells 10 in-app purchases, starting at $9.99 per year and Edinburgh Live sells 2 in-app purchases, starting at $4.99 per month. Whichever you choose, the download price is not the number that matters.
Edinburgh Live holds the better App Store score, 4.9 against 2.9. Both are backed by a comparable volume of ratings — 8 and 18 respectively. Written reviews complicate that: 31% of American Atheist Magazine's written reviews are positive against 24% of Edinburgh Live's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.
American Atheist Magazine ships an update every 17 months, Edinburgh Live monthly. The most recent releases landed on November 1, 2026 and November 7, 2026 respectively.
