About

GARIM

A UV app for people who have to stay out of the sun. My wife has been sensitive to sunlight for three years, an after-effect of medication. Even in midsummer she covers her face and the backs of her hands. I built GARIM for her, and I hope it helps anyone in the same position. NOW, AND WHAT'S COMING The current UV index fills the screen, with a background that shifts from blue to green, orange and red as it climbs. Below it, one sentence tells you what's ahead: "UV is dropping. It falls to 0.3 at 7 PM." TWO WEEKS OF CURVES See how UV rises and falls across the day. Swipe through two weeks, or press and drag along the graph to read any hour. The vertical scale is fixed rather than rescaled per day, so a low day actually looks low. ALERTS WITHOUT OPENING THE APP A morning briefing, plus a warning when UV crosses your threshold and an all-clear when it falls back. GARIM reads the forecast ahead of time and schedules the alerts, so they arrive on time even if you never open the app. You choose the thresholds. LOCK SCREEN AND HOME SCREEN WIDGETS Check the UV from your Lock Screen without unlocking. Home Screen widgets come in three sizes, and the medium and large ones include the daily curve. WORTH KNOWING When and how much sunscreen to apply, what to check in sun-protective clothing, whether there is UV on a rainy day, and the vitamin D problem that comes with covering up. Eight short articles, grounded in WHO guidance and published research. NO ACCOUNTS, NO ADS, NO TRACKING Start instantly. Your location is used only to fetch UV data and never leaves your device. GARIM comes from the Korean word "가림" — to shield, to cover from the sun. If something should be fixed, write to gim@flovah.com.

Verdict

The call

The clearest difference is in-app purchases: GARIM at none against Hygrometer's 2. GARIM also leads on ads (none vs shown) and update cadence (every 4 days vs every 3 weeks). Hygrometer's advantage is chart position (#133 vs unranked) and device support (3 vs 1). On price and iOS requirement there is nothing between them.
