Verdict
The clearest difference is rating: Chess Mega Bundle at 4.6 against Chess & Variants's 4.0. Chess Mega Bundle also leads on ratings volume (125 vs 12). Chess & Variants's advantage is ads (none vs shown) and monetization model (free vs free with in-app purchases). On price, review sentiment, update cadence and in-app purchases there is nothing between them.
Scored on Price · Rating · Positive reviews · Number of ratings · Update frequency · Ads · In-app purchases · Monetization · Best chart rank · Devices · Requires iOS
Both are free to download. Chess & Variants sells 1 one-off in-app purchase and Chess Mega Bundle sells 1 one-off in-app purchase. Whichever you choose, the download price is not the number that matters.
Chess Mega Bundle holds the better App Store score, 4.6 against 4.0. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Chess Mega Bundle has 125 ratings behind it against 12, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 56% of Chess & Variants's written reviews are positive against 50% of Chess Mega Bundle's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.
Chess & Variants ships an update every 17 months, Chess Mega Bundle every 15 months. The most recent releases landed on October 6, 2026 and October 16, 2026 respectively.
