Dank der engagierten Jägerinnen und Jäger hat man einen guten Überblick darüber, wie viele Rehe, Hirsche und Wildschweine ihr Leben auf der Straße lassen. Bei allen übrigen Wildtieren, wie Hase, Igel, Marder oder den Greifvögeln weiß man sehr wenig. Gerade letztere werden in den Wintermonaten häufig zu Opfern des Straßenverkehrs. Hier gilt es Wissenslücken zu schließen. Abhilfe soll das Tierfund-Kataster schaffen, dass Ende 2011 als Totfund-Kataster online ging und jedem die Erfassung und Meldung von toten Wildtieren ermöglicht. Das System dient dabei nicht nur der Erfassung von Unfällen mit Wild. Auch seltene Arten oder Arten, über die aufgrund schwieriger Erfassbarkeit nur unzureichende Daten vorliegen, können nun von jedermann erfasst und dokumentiert werden. Mit der App kann man nun auch Mobil die gefundenen Opfer von Straßenverkehr, Windenergieanlagen, Zäunen etc. erfassen und melden. Der Fundort wird an das Portal https://www.tierfund-kataster.de übermittelt. Die Ergebnisse werden dann ausgewertet, um die Gefährdungen von Wildtieren zu ermitteln, Wildunfallschwerpunkte zu identifizieren und um geeignete Schutzmaßnahmen einleiten zu können. Um beim Tierfund-Kataster mit machen zu können, benötigt man ein GPS-fähiges Gerät und man muss sich vorher einmal registrieren. Diese Registrierung ist kostenlos.
