Verdict
The clearest difference is review sentiment: Simple Notes at 81% against Color Notes's 14%. Simple Notes also leads on iOS requirement (8.0 vs 15.6). Color Notes's advantage is rating (4.1 vs 2.6) and ratings volume (640 vs 8). On price, update cadence, ads and in-app purchases there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Simple Notes sells 2 one-off in-app purchases and Color Notes sells 1 in-app purchase, starting at $7.99 per month. Whichever you choose, the download price is not the number that matters.
Color Notes holds the better App Store score, 4.1 against 2.6. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Color Notes has 640 ratings behind it against 8, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 81% of Simple Notes's written reviews are positive against 14% of Color Notes's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.
Simple Notes ships an update every 2 months, Color Notes every 6 weeks. The most recent releases landed on October 6, 2026 and October 13, 2026 respectively.
