Verdict
The clearest difference is in-app purchases: Streambox Media Player at none against Catchin' Sync's 1. Streambox Media Player also leads on update cadence (every 6 weeks vs every 11 months) and ratings volume (87 vs 11). Catchin' Sync's advantage is rating (4.5 vs 4.2). On price, ads and iOS requirement there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Catchin' Sync sells 1 one-off in-app purchase. Streambox Media Player asks for nothing beyond the download.
Catchin' Sync holds the better App Store score, 4.5 against 4.2. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Streambox Media Player has 87 ratings behind it against 11, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 58% of Catchin' Sync's written reviews are positive against 67% of Streambox Media Player's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.
Catchin' Sync ships an update every 11 months, Streambox Media Player every 6 weeks. The most recent releases landed on October 8, 2026 and October 5, 2026 respectively.
