What do you get if you cross a Stylophone with the famous Roland SH-101? Well We have circuit-bent a virtual Stylophone and added Roland SH-101 modifications. You can create wacky and eerie sounds to meaty bass lines. As well as the Stylophone sound, you now have an extra oscillator driving a sawtooth wave with filter and resonance from the SH-101. You can adjust the mixer for each oscillator and the LFO can control oscillators and amp. We have increased the LFO speed and depth of the pitch modulation. We have also added an SH-101 style sequencer for creating bass lines or arpeggios. It is still monophonic but the notes will continue to decay if you release your finger before playing another key. You can also play over the top of the sequence while its playing. Construct evolving sequences. The creative experience of using a constrained hardware system rather than the lazy freedom of just being able to “add another module”. ThreeTuring lays out everything in front of you without the need to keep going back to the manual. No menu diving, no alternative pages and easy to pick up if you haven’t used it for a few weeks or months. Having fun making music. ThreeTuring consists of a dual oscillator monosynth, a clock module for generating trigger patterns alongside a collection of generative modules encompassing a range of modular generative techniques including a turing machine, random generators, LFOs, envelope generators, a quantiser, a note accent and a set of effects modules. Pretty much every control can be modulated via the nine slot modmatrix, including the modulation settings themselves.

Verdict

The call

The clearest difference is rating: ThreeTuring at 5.0 against Stylo's 3.9. ThreeTuring also leads on update cadence (every 4 days vs every 20 months). Stylo's advantage is price ($0.99 vs $9.99) and ratings volume (32 vs 2). On ads, in-app purchases, monetization model and device support there is nothing between them.
