Verdict

The call

The clearest difference is price: Scrypted at Free against Blue Iris's $9.99. Scrypted also leads on rating (5.0 vs 3.7). Blue Iris's advantage is review sentiment (56% vs 33%) and update cadence (every 4 days vs every 3 weeks). On ads, in-app purchases, device support and iOS requirement there is nothing between them.

Scrypted is free to download; Blue Iris costs $9.99 up front. Neither carries in-app purchases, so what you see is what you pay.

ReceptionRating · Positive reviews · Number of ratings

Scrypted holds the better App Store score, 5.0 against 3.7. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Blue Iris has 418 ratings behind it against 16, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 56% of Blue Iris's written reviews are positive against 33% of Scrypted's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.

UpkeepUpdate frequency

Blue Iris ships an update every 4 days, Scrypted every 3 weeks. The most recent releases landed on October 13, 2026 and September 24, 2026 respectively.
