Chordex places a wealth of musical chord theory at your fingertips. It offers two modes of operation. In the first, you can select a chord and the app will list the notes in that chord, telling you both their names and their degree on the scale. You can also play the chord or individual notes on the built in tone generator. The second mode allows you to highlight notes on a virtual keyboard, while the app lists the chords that contain those notes in an order based on both how well they match and their obscurity. For example, if you select D and F, it is fair to say that D minor is a better fit than A flat diminished 7th, but both are options. Again, this mode lists the notes that make up each of the suggested chords and offers you the chance to listen to them all.

Verdict
The clearest difference is price: Melody at Free against Chordex's $0.99. Melody also leads on update cadence (every 3 months vs every 31 months) and review sentiment (50% vs 33%). Chordex's advantage is rating (4.0 vs 3.4) and in-app purchases (none vs 1). On ads, device support and iOS requirement there is nothing between them.

Melody is free to download; Chordex costs $0.99 up front. Melody sells 1 in-app purchase, starting at $0.99 per month. Chordex asks for nothing beyond the download.
Chordex holds the better App Store score, 4.0 against 3.4. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Melody has 7 ratings behind it against 1, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 33% of Chordex's written reviews are positive against 50% of Melody's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.
Chordex ships an update every 31 months, Melody every 3 months. The most recent releases landed on October 6, 2026 and October 2, 2026 respectively.
