Verdict
The clearest difference is review sentiment: eChess at 100% against BlueChess's 50%. eChess also leads on update cadence (every 2 months vs every 4 months) and iOS requirement (12.0 vs 16.0). BlueChess's advantage is rating (5.0 vs 3.0) and in-app purchases (none vs 4). On price, ratings volume, ads and device support there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. eChess sells 4 one-off in-app purchases. BlueChess asks for nothing beyond the download.
BlueChess holds the better App Store score, 5.0 against 3.0. Both are backed by a comparable volume of ratings — 2 and 4 respectively. Written reviews complicate that: 50% of BlueChess's written reviews are positive against 100% of eChess's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.
BlueChess ships an update every 4 months, eChess every 2 months. The most recent releases landed on November 1, 2026 and November 3, 2026 respectively.
