Short for impulse response, which can keep the entire cable + amp + cabinet + mic's static EQ & compression + room reverb information almost perfectly for your guitar/bass, how they will affect the tone are all saved within this IR file, which usually is just a 1 second tiny wav file around 20KB. And studio quality IR files are free everywhere nowadays, you can even make your own version. Although IR doesn't capture amp's distortion, but you can always pair overdrive/distortion with IR to dirt up the tone, which is really fun.
