Safe In Custody is a 2D learning experience that teaches people what safeguards should be implemented when arrested by police. Play as a travelling youth who is arrested and experience how a person deprived of liberty and a police officer are able to do in these situations, and learn the best course of actions that respects human rights and reduces the risks of torture and ill-treatment. This game was made in partnership with the Association of Prevention of Torture (APT). This game was designed not only to entertain but also to educate and raise awareness on some of the facts about torture. The reality is that the risk of torture exists everywhere, in any country, at any time. Preventing torture is about reducing these risks and creating environments where torture and ill-treatment are less likely to happen. Through this game, we aimed to emphasise the following key messages: The absolute prohibition of torture and cruel, inhuman, and degrading treatment are universally prohibited under any circumstances. There are some safeguards, that if implemented in custody, can reduce the risks of torture occurring. This includes: - Access to a lawyer to ensure legal representation and protection of your rights. - The immediate notification of family, friends, or a third party to inform them of your detention. - The right to challenge your detention before a court or judge. - Access to medical services - The duty of police officers to maintain a registry of the detainee, ensuring transparency and accountability.
