Why we built this Our co-founder is deaf, and we’re film nerds. We wanted to make the process of finding OC easier. Verdict
The clearest difference is in-app purchases: Open Caption Finder at none against Award Expert's 6. Open Caption Finder also leads on ads (none vs shown). Award Expert's advantage is update cadence (every 6 days vs every 2 months) and ratings volume (252 vs 10). On price, review sentiment, device support and iOS requirement there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Award Expert sells 6 in-app purchases, starting at $1.99 per month. Open Caption Finder asks for nothing beyond the download.
Award Expert holds the better App Store score, 4.8 against 4.6. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Award Expert has 252 ratings behind it against 10, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 93% of Award Expert's written reviews are positive against 100% of Open Caption Finder's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.
Award Expert ships an update every 6 days, Open Caption Finder every 2 months. The most recent releases landed on October 30, 2026 and October 24, 2026 respectively.
