Verdict
LivingWriter and ButterDocs both sit at 3.8 stars, but that hides the real split: 100% of ButterDocs's written reviews are positive against 53% of LivingWriter's. LivingWriter's advantage is update cadence (every 11 days vs every 3 months) and monetization model (free vs ad-supported). On price, rating, ads and in-app purchases there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Neither carries in-app purchases, so what you see is what you pay.
ButterDocs holds the better App Store score, 4.0 against 3.8. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: LivingWriter has 17 ratings behind it against 3, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews point the same way: 53% of LivingWriter's written reviews are positive against 100% of ButterDocs's.
LivingWriter ships an update every 11 days, ButterDocs every 3 months. Both last shipped on October 24, 2026.
