Community Science for Tortoise Conservation Gopher Tortoise Watch turns everyday observations into real conservation impact. Whether you're a curious hiker, a dedicated volunteer, a land manager, or a field researcher, the app makes it simple to record, map, and validate gopher tortoise sightings and their burrows — building a shared database that supports research and helps protect vital habitat. Gopher tortoises are a keystone species: their burrows shelter more than 350 other animals. Every observation you contribute helps researchers and wildlife authorities understand where tortoises live and which habitats need protection. REPORT IN SECONDS, CAMERA FIRST. A guided, photo-first flow walks you through logging a tortoise or a burrow. Snap a photo, automatically capture the GPS location, then add details such as life stage, size, observed behaviors, apparent health, and notes. It's fast enough for the trail and detailed enough to be genuinely useful for science. GUIDED HABITAT SURVEYS: Go beyond a single sighting with structured habitat assessments. Step-by-step prompts keep your data consistent and research-ready every time, so surveys from different people and places can be compared with confidence. REVISIT & TRACK BURROWS OVER TIME: Return to known burrows, update their status (active, inactive, and more), and link new sightings to nearby burrows. Over time, this builds a rich history for each site, revealing patterns that a one-time observation could never capture. INTERACTIVE MAP WITH SMART FILTERING: Explore every observation on a live, clustered map. Filter by species, estimated age, and burrow status, search by name or code, and jump straight back to your own sites. The map makes it easy to see the bigger picture and plan your next visit. YOUR LOCATION PRIVACY, PROTECTED. Sensitive coordinates stay safe. Precise locations of burrows and tortoises are automatically generalized to a coarse area for the public, so poachers and collectors can't pinpoint animals. Only the original observer and authorized reviewers or administrators can see exact points — privacy that respects both people and wildlife. MY OBSERVATIONS: Keep a personal log of everything you've submitted, track whether each record has been reviewed, edit your entries, and export your own data whenever you need it. Your contributions always stay yours. COMMUNITY REVIEW: Experienced contributors can help improve data quality by validating others' submissions, confirming the suggested species and age, suggesting a better identification, or flagging problematic images. A clear, transparent eligibility path allows active, accurate observers to apply for Community Reviewer status and take on a larger role in the project. HUMAN-LED PHOTO MODERATION Every flagged photo is reviewed by real people, not algorithms. This keeps the shared map accurate, respectful, and trustworthy for everyone in the community. TOOLS FOR COORDINATORS & RESEARCHERS Administrators get a dedicated dashboard to review pending submissions, approve or correct records, block inappropriate content, manage users and roles, and export detailed observation and data-quality reports as CSV. That makes it simple to analyze trends and share findings with conservation partners and wildlife agencies. BUILT FOR THE FIELD: Clean, fast, and easy to use with one hand, Gopher Tortoise Watch is designed for real conditions, from sandy scrub to pine flatwoods. Automatic location capture, offline-friendly reporting, and clear guidance mean less time fiddling with your phone and more time observing. WHY IT MATTERS: Community science works. When many people each contribute a little, the result is a powerful, landscape-scale dataset that no single team could gather alone. Your sightings help guide conservation decisions and protect the habitats gopher tortoises and their many burrow-mates depend on. Download Gopher Tortoise Watch and start making a difference today.
