Verdict
The clearest difference is monetization model: Backpacks at free with in-app purchases against Watch Faces's subscription. Backpacks also leads on update cadence (fortnightly vs every 2 months) and ratings volume (6 vs 2). Watch Faces's advantage is review sentiment (100% vs 67%) and rating (5.0 vs 4.7). On price, ads, in-app purchases and device support there is nothing between them.
