Verdict
The clearest difference is rating: Reading Journey at 4.7 against Softgoods's 4.4. Reading Journey also leads on ratings volume (382 vs 74). Softgoods's advantage is iOS requirement (16.4 vs 26.0). On price, review sentiment, update cadence and ads there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Softgoods sells 2 in-app purchases, starting at $1.99 per month and Reading Journey sells 2 in-app purchases, starting at $4.99 per month. Whichever you choose, the download price is not the number that matters.
Reading Journey holds the better App Store score, 4.7 against 4.4. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Reading Journey has 382 ratings behind it against 74, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 74% of Softgoods's written reviews are positive against 73% of Reading Journey's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.
Softgoods ships an update fortnightly, Reading Journey every 10 days. The most recent releases landed on October 27, 2026 and October 28, 2026 respectively.
