Verdict

The call

The clearest difference is monetization model: HoLaTeX at freemium against Math Notes's subscription. HoLaTeX also leads on rating (4.0 vs 3.6) and iOS requirement (16.6 vs 26.0). Math Notes's advantage is update cadence (fortnightly vs every 2 months) and ratings volume (22 vs 1). On price, ads, in-app purchases and device support there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. HoLaTeX sells 1 in-app purchase, starting at $23.95 per year and Math Notes sells 2 in-app purchases, starting at $3.99 per month. Whichever you choose, the download price is not the number that matters.
