Whimsee
Read full descriptionHide full description
Whimsee is a quiet app for noticing the world. People hide little glimmers in real places: a few words, or a photograph, left exactly where they stood. You cannot open one from the sofa. The only way to read a glimmer is to walk to it. The screen warms as you get closer and cools as you drift away, like the childhood game of hotter and colder. When you are close enough, you check the place on your phone, and whatever someone left is yours. Keep it forever, or let it drift on for the next person to find. What you can leave Write a few words and digitally tuck them into the spot where you stand. Add a photograph if the place has earned one. Choose how long it shines for, from a single day to a whole season, and it fades on its own when the time is up. Nothing you leave lingers longer than you meant it to. Places worth the walk Some places are too good to be temporary, so you can mark a spot instead: a permanent gift to everyone who wanders after you. A bench with a view. A bank of moss that glows after rain. A churchyard full of old yew. Anyone can visit and leave a message there. Made for slow walking Whimsee works deep in the woods with no signal. Pack an area before you set off and the glimmers, the photographs and the guidance all come with you. Pocket mode rests the screen and guides you by feel, so you can walk with your eyes up and your phone away. There is a text size setting, motion can be reduced, and every photograph carries a written description. What Whimsee will never do No feed. No follower counts. No algorithm deciding what you see. No adverts. Your data is never sold. Nobody can see where you are. Others only ever see the places where things were deliberately left, never a person, and never a live position. You can wander without an account, and delete everything from inside the app whenever you like. Whimsee began in a recovery journey, in the small habit of finding one glimmer of nature a day. It is made in the Forest of Dean by one person. Leave no trace, except on whimsee.
