Verdict
The clearest difference is rating: MapGenie at 4.8 against 5e Dnd Spell List's 4.0. MapGenie also leads on ads (none vs shown) and ratings volume (162 vs 8). 5e Dnd Spell List's advantage is review sentiment (80% vs 47%) and update cadence (every 5 days vs every 17 months). On price, in-app purchases, monetization model and device support there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. MapGenie sells 1 one-off in-app purchase and 5e Dnd Spell List sells 1 one-off in-app purchase. Whichever you choose, the download price is not the number that matters.
MapGenie holds the better App Store score, 4.8 against 4.0. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: MapGenie has 162 ratings behind it against 8, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 47% of MapGenie's written reviews are positive against 80% of 5e Dnd Spell List's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.
MapGenie ships an update every 17 months, 5e Dnd Spell List every 5 days. The most recent releases landed on October 27, 2026 and October 16, 2026 respectively.
