Verdict

The call

The clearest difference is rating: MapGenie at 4.8 against Runner's 3.2. MapGenie also leads on ratings volume (157 vs 19). Runner's advantage is update cadence (every 3 days vs every 17 months) and review sentiment (57% vs 43%). On price, ads, in-app purchases and monetization model there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. MapGenie sells 1 one-off in-app purchase and Runner sells 3 in-app purchases, starting at $0.99 per 7 days. Whichever you choose, the download price is not the number that matters.

ReceptionRating · Positive reviews · Number of ratings

MapGenie holds the better App Store score, 4.8 against 3.2. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: MapGenie has 157 ratings behind it against 19, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 43% of MapGenie's written reviews are positive against 57% of Runner's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.

UpkeepUpdate frequency

MapGenie ships an update every 17 months, Runner every 3 days. The most recent releases landed on October 16, 2026 and October 17, 2026 respectively.
