This educational app displays gravitational wave chirps created by mergers of massive black holes in several different ways, giving users an intuitive understanding of these exotic disturbances of space-time itself produced by cataclysmic events in distant galaxies. FEATURES: • Simulation: Experience the intricate behavior of gravitational waves through physics simulation of inspiralling black holes that merge to form a final black hole which then “shakes off” its excess energy. • Visualizations: See the essence of gravitational waves via waveform plots, frequency evolutions, and spectrograms, to understand the patterns and how they depend on black hole masses. • Auditory Experience: Listen closely as you hear the evolution of gravitational waves, detecting the characteristic increase in time in strength and frequency. Try varying masses to see how pitch is affected. • Dynamic Animations: Witness the captivating dance of black holes in collision animations. Explore the propagation of these waves through space-time with mesmerizing spiral animations. • Educational Insights: Gain a comprehensive understanding of gravitational waves and the pioneering work of LIGO through informative text pages, enhancing your knowledge of these cosmic phenomena. COMPATIBILITY Compatible with iPhone and iPad, iOS 16 or later. ACKNOWLEDGEMENT Supported by the National Science Foundation with grant PHY-2110181.
Mayon Volcano
Read full descriptionHide full description
Explore Mayon Volcano in Bicol, Philippines, from the rice plain to the summit and into a hidden world beneath the cone. Built from NASA SRTM elevation data and Esri satellite imagery, Mayon Volcano presents a landscape in real-world metre units. Orbit the mountain, move the sun through the day and explore historical eruption scenes. The terrain is an elevation-data model; underground shapes and eruption effects are educational illustrations. YOUR FREE MOUNTAIN Explore the landscape, visit Cagsawa Ruins and nearby communities, compare familiar landmarks for scale, and travel through historical scenes for 1814, 1968, 1984 and 2018. Journey Inside guides you through four stations in a conceptual volcanic interior. Follow a Crystal helps you read the evidence preserved in erupted rock. Classroom resources and the first two stops in each new expedition are free. THE LIVING MOUNTAIN EXPEDITION PACK One optional permanent purchase unlocks three complete investigations, with six stops each. There is no subscription. • The Restless Interior: change relative pressure, crystal content and gas escape to investigate how magma behaves. • Read the Mountain: open a historical 2018 case, compare illustrative seismic traces and learn why observations need context. • The Volcanic Engine: explore arc volcanism, the slow geological carbon cycle and a planetary thought experiment. Established science and the publisher's working thesis are clearly distinguished. ASK THE MOUNTAIN · NEW IN 2.1 Adults aged 18 and older can ask questions at the stops in The Restless Interior. A neutral age screen keeps the AI pilot separate from the experiments and evidence available to younger users. The optional AI guide draws on selected research summaries, shows evidence with its answers and explains uncertainty. Give permission before sending a question; save useful answers as editable notes or report an answer inside the app. Internet access and shared usage limits apply. AI may be wrong and does not describe current volcanic conditions. The permanent pack does not include unlimited AI availability. KEEP THE EVIDENCE WITH THE DISCOVERY Save discoveries in a field journal on your device. Evidence panels link to sources and explain what is observed, inferred, illustrated or unresolved. Experiments are qualitative illustrations, not calibrated simulations or live measurements. A CLEARER, CALMER EXPERIENCE The Living Mountain refines terrain detail, atmospheric light, lava effects and reading screens. Motion and graphics controls let you choose reduced motion or battery saver. Illustrated investigations also work in the readable fallback without WebGL. A MOUNTAIN THAT IS A REAL PLACE The Cagsawa Ruins marker, model and story viewpoint now use a shared corrected location in Busay, Daraga. Local voices and cultural stories will require real contributors, consent and review; this release does not present invented resident testimony. The app is free to download. The Expedition Pack is optional; its local price is shown before purchase. Restore purchases using the same App Store account. Journal progress is saved on this device. Mayon Volcano is an educational visualization. It is not a live monitoring, warning, forecast, evacuation or decision-support tool and is not affiliated with a monitoring agency. For current volcanic activity and safety instructions, follow PHIVOLCS and local authorities.
