A New Account of Tales of the World (Shi Shuo Xin Yu) is a collection of character anecdotes compiled under Liu Yiqing, Prince of Linchuan of the Liu Song dynasty, around 430 CE. Its entries are arranged in thirty-six categories — virtuous conduct, speech, government, letters and the rest — recording the talk and doings of the gentry and noted men from the end of the Han to the Eastern Jin. The received text runs to some 1,130 entries; this app carries 1,085 of them. Written in a spare, telling hand, it captures the bearing, wit and intelligence of the Wei-Jin literati and is the primary source for the culture of that age. Its figures are vividly drawn, its language terse and lasting; a great many Chinese idioms come from its pages. It is the masterwork of the classical Chinese anecdote and shaped the later tradition of the literary sketch. Lu Xun called it "a textbook for men of letters," and it remains the classic way into the Wei-Jin spirit and China's old art of judging character. Features: • Full original text, a clear modern translation, and a present-day parallel for each entry • Offline Chinese narration of all 1,085 entries, across all thirty-six chapters • 9-language interface (English, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, Thai, Spanish, French) • Bookmarks, search, reading history and a night-friendly reading mode • Autoplay with a sleep timer
