Arkive is a Bible study app built around one idea: the text is the surface, and understanding is the goal. READ ONE VERSE AT A TIME Scroll through Scripture a verse per page, or switch to classic chapters with paragraphs, poetry lines and red letters, and swipe to turn the chapter. Every chapter opens with its own page, illustrated with public-domain engravings by Gustave Doré and Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld, and every book begins with an introduction: who wrote it, when, its outline and its key verse. Read to Me reads aloud, follows along, keeps going into the next chapter and has a sleep timer. THE ORIGINAL WORDS Tap any verse, in any translation, to see its Hebrew or Greek word by word, with transliteration, grammar, Strong's definitions, the Brown-Driver-Briggs Hebrew lexicon and the Abbott-Smith Greek lexicon. See where a word occurs, book by book, and how it is translated. Follow it to every other verse that uses it, or open a name in four Bible dictionaries, with what the name means and every verse they cite a tap away. Every Old Testament passage quoted in the New links both ways. HISTORY AND PLACE Chronicle puts the people, places and events of the Bible on a timeline and a map. Adams' Synchronological Chart of 1878, 6,000 years on one scroll, is built in and tappable: tap a year for the events around it, or a scene for its verses. Journeys traces Abraham, the Exodus, Jesus' ministry and Paul's voyages stop by stop, and any chapter opens a map of the places it names. YOUR OWN STUDY Collect verses, word studies and notes into threads around any question or theme. Highlight whole verses or just the words that matter, bookmark and annotate, and see at a glance which verses you've already studied. Send a copy of a thread to a friend. The Explorer's Journal maps what you've read in each translation and leads you to the verses you missed, with guided walkthroughs for building a thread. Everything syncs through iCloud and can be exported at any time, and Siri and Shortcuts can open any passage or thread. A STUDY LIBRARY INSIDE Nave's Topical Index of over 5,000 topics, Names of God, prophecies and their fulfillments, the parables and miracles of Jesus, a harmony of the Gospels, the covenants, the feasts of Israel, kings and rulers, angels, a converter for biblical weights and measures, the meaning of numbers, and family trees for over 3,000 people. Every entry is tied to the verses it comes from, and every verse shows the topics and entries that cite it. SEARCH LIKE A SCHOLAR Exact phrases, OR, exclusions, prefixes, words near each other and Strong's numbers, across the whole Bible or a single book. Search the Hebrew and Greek by grammar, such as every aorist imperative in Romans, and find topics, reference entries and Bible dictionary articles alongside the verses. MADE FOR IPAD A study panel sits beside the verse with its original words, related verses, commentary, topics and history, in the scroll view and beside the chapter in landscape. Nearby verses roll past like a wheel, chapter openers spread across the screen in landscape, and keyboard shortcuts move through Scripture without lifting your hands. TRANSLATIONS AND SOURCES KJV with its translators' marginal notes, the Berean Standard Bible with its footnotes, and NASB. Six commentaries, with book introductions: Matthew Henry, Jamieson-Fausset-Brown, John Gill, Adam Clarke, John Calvin, and Keil & Delitzsch. Easton's, Smith's, the International Standard Bible Encyclopedia and Hitchcock's Bible Names, and over 89,000 cross-references. Arkive works offline, except NASB, which is read online.

Verdict
The clearest difference is rating: Arkive at 5.0 against Sabbat's 4.3. Arkive also leads on update cadence (every 2 days vs every 6 days). Sabbat's advantage is in-app purchases (none vs 4) and ratings volume (14 vs 2). On price, review sentiment, ads and monetization model there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Arkive sells 4 one-off in-app purchases. Sabbat asks for nothing beyond the download.
Arkive holds the better App Store score, 5.0 against 4.3. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Sabbat has 14 ratings behind it against 2, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews split almost evenly too, at 100% and 100% positive.
Sabbat ships an update every 6 days, Arkive every 2 days. The most recent releases landed on October 24, 2026 and October 28, 2026 respectively.
