[ RULES ] To win the game, all cards must be arranged over the four foundation piles (the slots marked with A at the top of the screen) in four sequences of same suit from A-K. + Cards can be moved from tableau to tableau (the eight piles of cards on the screen). + Cards can be moved either as top card alone, or as an alternating-color sequence (e.g. Q-J-10). + A card can also be moved to an empty cell (the four slots on the top-right side of the screen) or to a foundation pile. A cell may contain only one card. + The longest sequence of cards you can move during a single operation is equal to the number of empty cells plus one. However, this number doubles for every empty tableau available (notice though that when moving the cards to an empty tableau, then that tableau is not counted). The reason is that an empty tableau acts like an extra empty cell, yet it can add multiple cards on it.

Verdict

The call

The clearest difference is review sentiment: New FreeCell Solitaire at 100% against Classic FreeCell's 45%. New FreeCell Solitaire also leads on in-app purchases (none vs 1) and update cadence (fortnightly vs every 2 months). Classic FreeCell's advantage is rating (4.7 vs 4.3) and ratings volume (1.6K vs 12). On price, ads, device support and iOS requirement there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Classic FreeCell sells 1 one-off in-app purchase. New FreeCell Solitaire asks for nothing beyond the download.

ReceptionRating · Positive reviews · Number of ratings

Classic FreeCell holds the better App Store score, 4.7 against 4.3. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Classic FreeCell has 1.6K ratings behind it against 12, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 100% of New FreeCell Solitaire's written reviews are positive against 45% of Classic FreeCell's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.

UpkeepUpdate frequency

New FreeCell Solitaire ships an update fortnightly, Classic FreeCell every 2 months. The most recent releases landed on November 1, 2026 and November 6, 2026 respectively.
