BASIC CONCEPTS SKILLS SCREENER (BCSS) Evaluate early language and academic readiness concepts with ease. Understanding early learning concepts—such as size, shape, quantity, position, and sequence—is an essential building block for language development. These concepts are closely tied to a child's ability to follow directions, participate in the classroom, and develop foundational reading and math skills. The Basic Concepts Skills Screener (BCSS) is a dynamic, individually administered qualitative tool designed specifically for Speech-Language Pathologists, educators, and parents to easily screen, describe, and monitor a child’s conceptual understanding. Authored by experienced SLPs Darlene Nething, MS, CCC-SLP and Mary Huston, MS, CCC-SLP, and developed by Smarty Ears, BCSS provides actionable, descriptive data to guide your therapy and interventions. COMPREHENSIVE CONCEPT EVALUATION Assess a child's knowledge across four critical categories: • Spatial Concepts: Words relating to position and space (e.g., next to, under, behind). • Quantitative Concepts: Understanding quantity and measurement (e.g., equal, few, more). • Comparative Concepts: Comprehending comparative and superlative adjectives (e.g., big, bigger, same, different). • Temporal Concepts: Recognizing concepts of time and sequence (e.g., first, last, before). FLEXIBLE & ENGAGING TESTING MODES • Two Assessment Options: Choose the Quick Screening (30 items) for a rapid baseline, or the Full Screening (79 items) for a comprehensive analysis. • Child-Friendly Interface: A completely modernized, distraction-free testing screen featuring fluid native animations, tactile haptic feedback, and a clear visual progress bar to keep children engaged without overwhelming them. • Bilingual Support: Conduct assessments seamlessly in both English and Portuguese. INDUSTRY-LEADING REPORTING & DATA TRACKING BCSS doesn't just score a test; it provides a roadmap for intervention. The app analyzes responses by concept type and classifies them as Achieved, Emerging, or Not Achieved. • Age of Acquisition Breakdown: Reports now feature a highly detailed analysis of concepts mastered versus those missed, organized precisely by the typical age of acquisition (Ages 3, 4, 5, and 6). • Beautiful, Shareable Reports: Generate professional, easy-to-read PDF reports complete with performance graphs, detailed item analyses, and customized evaluator and clinic details. • Monitor Progress: Re-administer the screener over time to track growth and determine the effectiveness of targeted teaching or interventions.
