Onda P
Read full descriptionHide full description
Onda P receives alerts from a community earthquake early-warning network. Volunteers run desktop stations with accelerometers; when several of them independently detect compatible shaking, the network correlates it into an event and pushes an alert to phones in the affected area. This phone measures nothing. Onda P shows what the network sends, and it never produces an alert of its own. WHAT IT DOES • Shows the alert full screen, with a countdown to the estimated arrival of the strongest shaking, when the network can compute one. • Says what to do: drop, cover, hold on. • Keeps a history of the alerts you received, with the detail of each event. • Includes a drill: you can see the full alert screen, clearly marked as a drill, whenever you want. Without it, nobody can find out whether an alert would actually reach their phone except during an earthquake, which is too late. WHAT IT IS NOT • Not an official warning service. Not affiliated with or endorsed by any government agency. In Colombia the official sources are the Servicio Geológico Colombiano and the UNGRD. Onda P is supplementary and experimental. • It makes no prediction. It warns about an event the network is already seeing, taking advantage of communications travelling faster than seismic waves. • A warning may arrive late, not arrive at all, or be withdrawn if the network can no longer support the event. Every figure it shows — intensity, arrival time, distance — is an estimate carrying uncertainty. When the network's solution is not well conditioned, Onda P withholds the countdown rather than show one it cannot stand behind. It never shows magnitude: a consumer accelerometer without traceable calibration gives no basis for one. PERMISSIONS • Notifications: needed to warn you while the app is closed, which is when it matters. • Approximate area: optional to grant, but required to receive alerts, because the network sends each one only to the affected zone. A rounded point is taken and renewed only when you move to another area, also with the app closed if you allow it; no routes are stored. You can withdraw it at any time from the home screen. No accounts, no sign-in, no tracking, and no advertising. The only third-party dependency is SwiftyH3, an open-source library that draws the network's coverage on the device itself, with no network connections.
