Verdict

The call

The clearest difference is review sentiment: KyBook at 71% against Books Reader's 38%. KyBook also leads on update cadence (every 3 weeks vs every 3 months) and ratings volume (466 vs 22). Books Reader's advantage is rating (4.7 vs 4.4). On price, ads, in-app purchases and monetization model there is nothing between them.

CostPrice · In-app purchases · Ads · Monetization

Both are free to download. KyBook sells 2 one-off in-app purchases and Books Reader sells 9 in-app purchases, starting at $1.99 per month. Whichever you choose, the download price is not the number that matters.

ReceptionRating · Positive reviews · Number of ratings

Books Reader holds the better App Store score, 4.7 against 4.4. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: KyBook has 466 ratings behind it against 22, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 71% of KyBook's written reviews are positive against 38% of Books Reader's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.

UpkeepUpdate frequency

KyBook ships an update every 3 weeks, Books Reader every 3 months. The most recent releases landed on November 1, 2026 and November 3, 2026 respectively.
