SPEAKplay!™ is an evidence-based therapy app to introduce mobile interfaces to prospective users of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). SPEAKplay! offers a series of gesture-based games that directly target the difficulties in learning complex and multi-step motor skills to access content on mobile AAC devices. The intended outcome of engaging with these games is to enhance motor functioning of the young child or first time AAC user to maximize operational competence in navigating touchscreen-based content. With better gesture and operating skills, children can get started earlier on mobile devices and benefit from AAC applications to the full extent. Training with SPEAKplay! focuses on the critical gestures of (1) Directed and Sustained Touch, (2) Drag and Drop, and (3) Vertical and Horizontal Swipe. The gestures are introduced through a series of fun and engaging games, including “Pop the Bubbles” (for Targeted Touch), “Fly the Rocket” (for Targeted and Sustained Touch), and “Feed the Dino” (for Horizontal and Vertical Swipes as well as Drag and Drop). In the “Pop the Bubbles” game the user is faced with multicolored bubbles that emerge from a bathtub on the bottom. When the bubbles are tapped or “popped” by the user, they disappear from the screen with an auditory “bubble pop” cue. The task for the user is to “pop” all the bubbles till the “You win!” screen appears. To increase the game’s difficulty, the size and number of bubbles available to “pop” can be modified. The “Fly the Rocket” game teaches its users to respond to a visual stimulus, the movements of the stars. The stars either pulse, shake or flash, signaling the user that they need to be touched to fly the rocket through space. With each star that is pressed the rocket moves closer to the moon, and once it reaches the moon the user wins the game. Three levels of difficulty involve four, six, or eight stars to be tapped. Randomization of the sequence in which the stars appear makes the game different each time and unpredictable. The “Feed the Dino” game teaches the user to press and hold onto a dinosaur and move it around to collect food and bones scattered across the screen. To reward and encourage the user to keep playing, the dinosaur dances for a moment as bones are collected before continuing. Once all the food and bones are gathered, the user drags the dinosaur to its home to complete the game and reach the win screen. The game has two modes, one with a free moving dino and one with a path that the dino must follow. This path can be adjusted to be shorter or longer to change the difficulty for completion. Dawn is a symbol-based AAC app (augmentative and alternative communication) for people who cannot rely on speech: nonspeaking and minimally verbal autistic children and adults, people with apraxia, aphasia, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, ALS, or a recovering voice after a stroke or surgery. Tap symbols, build a sentence, and Dawn speaks it aloud in a natural, modern voice. It turns an iPhone or iPad into a speech generating device. Everything runs on the device. No account, no internet, no data collected. A VOICE OF YOUR OWN: Voice banking, done on the device. Record about eight seconds of speech and Dawn builds a personal voice in about half a minute. It can be the user's own voice, preserved while speech is still available, or a family member's. The recording never leaves the device. VOICE STUDIO: Over 900 natural neural voices across ages and accents, including children's voices. Shape any voice by pitch and age, or hand Dawn a recording and it surfaces the voices nearest to it. One take is enough, even a shaky or noisy one. BUILT TO BE FAST: The whole engine lives on the phone, so a tapped sentence starts speaking immediately, in an elevator, on a plane, in a school with no Wi-Fi. Speed matters in a conversation, and Dawn treats it as a feature. EVERYTHING A FULL AAC APP SHOULD HAVE 3,400+ symbols (the complete Mulberry set), plus personal photos as symbols A core vocabulary home board that stays put, with folders for food, people, feelings, places and more, and a Quick Phrases board for the sentences you say most Six grid sizes in two families (3x4, 4x6, 5x7 and 6x8, 8x10, 10x12): a word keeps its place on the board until you move it, and going up a size within a family keeps every home word in its cell Word forms and sentence starters that keep grammar one tap away Switch access: row, column or block scanning, step or auto at any speed, switch timing, an adjustable highlight. iOS Switch Control works with every button, and so do iOS Eye Tracking and dwell on the devices that offer them Typing view with word prediction and the same instant voice Message banking: record whole phrases and play them back exactly as said Profiles: each person who shares the device gets their own boards, voices, recordings and settings Partner tools: modeling mode, edit mode, Find a word, and a caregiver gate A whiteboard with six pens that can speak what is written on it Open Board Format import from other AAC systems One-tap full backups, kept in your own files VoiceOver support, Dynamic Type, hold-to-activate timing, and an easier-reading option PRIVATE BY ARCHITECTURE: Dawn has no server and no sign-in. Messages, recordings, voices, boards, and photos stay on the device. The App Privacy label says "Data Not Collected" because there is nothing to collect it with. ONE APP, BOTH DEVICES: One subscription covers iPhone and iPad. The backup device in a parent's pocket can be the primary in a pinch. Dawn is a yearly subscription with a free trial, billed through the App Store. Privacy policy: https://dawnaac.com/privacy.
