Motive is the multiplayer improv party game where everyone plays a different character with a different motive — in the same scene, at the same time. What happens next is anyone's guess. No scripts. No winners. Best with 2–8 players. It's improv — we don't really make the rules. — HOW IT WORKS — One player creates a room. Everyone joins on their own phone. Each person gets a character with a backstory and one clear motive — a single thing they secretly want — that only shows up on their screen. Private prompts drop in throughout the scene to push the action forward, and a shared timer keeps things moving. Here's what makes it different: your prompts are tied to the location the group actually picked. Every scene has its own prompt set, handed out privately across the room — so what you get is specific to where you are, not a generic nudge. Follow your motive. Chase it hard. Or let the scene pull you somewhere else entirely. It goes where it goes. — 4 MODES — CLASSIC MODE The original Motive experience. 355 roles, from "Pirate Who Went to Therapy" to "Chosen One Who Did Not Ask for This" to "Person Raised by Cats." Every character comes with a backstory, a motive, and a scene-matched prompt set that builds through the round. ANIME-MOTIVE 13 anime archetypes — Tsundere, Kuudere, Genki, Himedere, and more — with hundreds of characters written for each one. Scene-specific prompts and a first beat that sets the tone fast. Perfect for anime fans, drama kids, and anyone who has ever thought "this is my arc." COMIC-MOTIVE 16 comic-book archetypes — The Hero, The Villain, The Sidekick, The Bystander, and more — built for big choices, dramatic reveals, and scenes that feel like an issue you'd actually want to read. MOTIVE JR. — NEW A whole mode for the littlest players. Big, simple roles — you're a cat, a dragon, a firefighter — with easy prompts to act out ("Meow!", "Jump up and down!", "Freeze!"). Prompts land every 15 seconds with a countdown, and each round ends on a big group freeze. Grown-ups read along for pre-readers. The whole family can get silly together. PLUS: In any grown-up game, a little kid can "Join as a Jr. member" — they'll get a simple duck-or-cat role while everyone else plays the regular scene. Nobody sits out. — BUILT FOR GROUPS — Motive shines when everyone commits. It's great for party nights, game nights, improv warm-ups, drama-class icebreakers, LARP character development, and team building people actually show up for. The sweet spot is 2–8 players. The more everyone commits to their characters, the better it gets — and the people who refuse to commit usually end up accidentally hilarious anyway. — WHAT'S INCLUDED FREE — Classic mode with 25 free roles Motive Jr. with 100 free roles 20 free scenes Full multiplayer — create or join a room, no account needed — UNLOCK EVERYTHING (one-time purchase) — All 355 Classic roles, plus every Anime, Comic, and Motive Jr. role — 2,000+ characters in all 600 scenes across Classic, Anime, and Comic, each with its own prompt set 45,000+ private prompts Scene-specific prompts matched to wherever the group is playing All future mode updates included One purchase. No subscription. Ever. — GREAT FOR — Parties · Game nights · Family time · Improv practice · LARP warmups · Drama class · Friend groups who've run out of things to do Motive doesn't tell you how to play. It just sets the stage.
