Automatically categorize drives based on your work hours, or save frequent destinations as Favorite Locations - such as “Home,” “Office,” or “Client” - with their own assigned categories. Add notes or a business purpose to any trip. MANUAL TRIPS AND ODOMETER RECORDS Add trips manually using start and end addresses. You can also record your vehicle’s odometer readings alongside GPS-measured distance, making your mileage log as detailed as you need. SUMMARIES, SEARCH, AND REPORTS View your total trips, total mileage, and estimated deduction at a glance. Search by address, place name, note, or purpose to find trips without endless scrolling. A Home Screen widget keeps your year-to-date business deduction visible. Export CSV or PDF reports for any date range, or create a complete Year-End Tax Package in one step, including: A per-trip CSV A summary PDF A compliance summary CUSTOM RATES AND TAX SETTINGS Smart Mileage includes the current standard IRS mileage rate, and you can enter your own reimbursement rate at any time. Business, Medical, and Charity trips each use their respective deduction rates. Rates are tied to the year of each trip, so updating this year’s rate will never change calculations from previous years. OPTIONAL - Customize automatic tracking to fit your needs: Choose the trigger speed for auto-start Adjust the stop delay Set a minimum distance to ignore very short trips FOLLOW YOUR TRIP WHILE YOU DRIVE A Live Activity on your Lock Screen and Dynamic Island displays your live distance and a running timer. You can confirm that your drive is being recorded without opening the app. BATTERY-FRIENDLY BACKGROUND TRACKING You stay in control. Limit automatic tracking to times when your phone is plugged in - ideal for rideshare and delivery drivers who keep their devices charging. PRIVACY FIRST - YOUR TRIPS STAY WITH YOU There is no sign-up, and our servers are never involved. Your trips are stored in a local database on your iPhone and are never uploaded to us. Street addresses and place names are retrieved through Apple’s Maps service, while your mileage log remains on your device. Create a backup file you own, then restore it whenever needed. (iCloud Sync coming soon) No ads. No tracking SDKs. Choose the units that work for you: Miles or kilometers: (mph or km/h) BACKGROUND LOCATION Smart Mileage uses your location in the background, including when the app is closed or not in use, to automatically detect and measure drives. This functionality requires the “Always” location setting. Deduction amounts are estimates based on standard IRS mileage rates and are not tax advice. Confirm your figures with a tax professional before filing.

Mileful turns the driving you already do into a mileage record you can hand to your accountant. Log a drive yourself, or let Mileful notice you're driving and record it for you. Either way, each trip ends up with the date, route, distance, and purpose a deduction needs. AUTOMATIC TRACKING Once Automatic Tracking is on in Settings, Mileful records your drives in the background. Open the app while you're driving and the trip sits at the top of the Home tab with the time and distance counting up. If Live Activity is turned on too, in Settings under Push Notifications, that same card then stays on your Lock Screen and in the Dynamic Island for the rest of the drive. Tap Stop & save drive when you arrive. OR TYPE IT IN Enter where you started and where you went. Address autocomplete fills in the rest, and Apple Maps figures out the distance by road, the way it would if you asked it for directions. Flip the Round trip switch and the drive back is saved as its own trip, with its own route. BUILT FOR TAX TIME Pick the country you file in for each tax year and Mileful does the math. Rates for the United States, Canada, and Mexico are built in for 2022 through 2026. When the IRS changes a rate partway through the year, as it did in 2022 and again in 2026, each drive uses the rate for its date, and the Mileage Rates screen shows both periods. If you file somewhere else, pick your country and add your own rates. Amounts show in that country's currency. Export a CSV for any month, year, or custom date range, filtered to Business, Personal, or All. CATEGORIZE WITH A SWIPE Swipe a trip right for Business or left for Personal. A shorter swipe also shows a Purpose button, for something more specific like Customer Visit or a purpose you added yourself. The Home tab shows two totals. Claimed is the deduction from the trips you've categorized. Potential is what the uncategorized ones could add, and those trips are listed right below. If a drive Mileful recorded still has no category at 8:00 PM, you get one reminder for the day. You can change that to a notification after each drive, with Business and Personal buttons right on the Lock Screen, or to one reminder a week. IMPORT FROM ANOTHER APP Import Trips reads a CSV with the usual column names, so an export from another mileage app comes in as is. Pick the dates to bring in, then choose what happens to the trips you already have on those days. Keep them adds the file's trips next to yours and leaves the likely duplicates turned off, so they only come in if you turn them on. Replace them deletes yours and puts the file's in their place, after showing you what would be deleted and offering to save a copy first. If a file has dates but no times, Mileful spaces each day's trips out from 9:00 AM, and a row editor lets you fix a line before it's saved. EVERYTHING ELSE More than one vehicle. Your own purposes and your own rates. Parking and tolls on any trip. An interactive map of every recorded route. Light or dark mode in Appearance. English, Spanish, and Russian. YOUR DATA STAYS YOURS Trips sync through your own private iCloud, so they're on every iPhone you sign in to and survive a lost or replaced phone. There is no Mileful account and no Mileful server. The app has no analytics and no third-party SDKs. Apart from your iCloud, the only place your locations go is Apple Maps, to look up an address or a route. The only thing that ever reaches us is a bug report you choose to send, and you see it before it goes.

Verdict
The clearest difference is rating: Mileful at 5.0 against Smart Mileage Tracker's 4.6. Smart Mileage Tracker's advantage is ratings volume (25 vs 1) and update cadence (weekly vs fortnightly). On price, ads, in-app purchases and monetization model there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Neither carries in-app purchases, so what you see is what you pay.
Mileful holds the better App Store score, 5.0 against 4.6. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Smart Mileage Tracker has 25 ratings behind it against 1, so its average is the more settled of the two.
Smart Mileage Tracker ships an update weekly, Mileful fortnightly. The most recent releases landed on October 28, 2026 and October 25, 2026 respectively.
