Whence helps you answer a simple question: “What’s this song? and where have I heard it on screen?” IDENTIFY IN SECONDS Record a short clip and get the track title and artist. From there, Whence pulls in where that song was used in TV and film, so you can connect the music to the moment. SEE THE SHOW OR MOVIE Browse placements with posters and context when available, so you can jump from a tune you love to the scene or series it came from. BUILT FOR FANS OF SOUNDTRACKS • Quick identification from the main screen • Rich result details for songs with on-screen appearances • History of what you’ve identified • Favorites to save songs you care about Whether you’re chasing a needle drop from last night’s episode or a song from a trailer, Whence is your shortcut from “what’s that song?” to “where was it used?” --- Whence is designed for discovering music in the context of what you watch.

Verdict
The clearest difference is rating: Whence? at 5.0 against UPMASH's 4.1. Whence? also leads on in-app purchases (none vs 3). UPMASH's advantage is ratings volume (10 vs 1) and update cadence (every 3 weeks vs every 6 weeks). On price, ads, device support and iOS requirement there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. UPMASH sells 3 in-app purchases, starting at $4.99 per month. Whence? asks for nothing beyond the download.
Whence? holds the better App Store score, 5.0 against 4.1. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: UPMASH has 10 ratings behind it against 1, so its average is the more settled of the two.
UPMASH ships an update every 3 weeks, Whence? every 6 weeks. The most recent releases landed on October 24, 2026 and October 14, 2026 respectively.
