Learn to speak English, Spanish, French, Japanese, Italian, German, Portuguese, Mandarin Chinese or Korean by actually speaking them. ConvoLive is speaking practice with an AI tutor. You talk out loud, an AI character talks back, and you work through real situations: ordering coffee, checking into a hotel, getting through an airport. Nothing to schedule, and a partner who is never going to judge you. No subscription, no paywall Most language apps put spoken conversation behind a paid tier. ConvoLive does not. There is no premium plan, no locked scenario library, and no trial that expires. Sign up with an email address, Google or Apple, with no password to remember, and there are no payment details to enter. A town that remembers you Open the app and you land in your town: a cast of characters you keep meeting, relationships that grow the longer you talk to them, and a day counter and a journal that track where you have been. Want to jump straight into one situation instead? Quick chat keeps the full scenario list on hand. Why speaking works Flashcard apps train you to recognise words. They do not train your mouth. Most learners can read far more than they can say, and that gap only closes one way, which is practice saying things out loud to somebody who answers. Challenges: show how far you've come Five lines with a character from your course. They speak, you answer before the timer runs out, and you are scored on what you actually said. Your camera records the whole round as a vertical video, ready for Instagram Reels, TikTok or your Stories. Post your first shaky attempt, then post the day you get five out of five. Nothing shows progress like watching yourself actually speak the language. Real goals, not open-ended chat Every conversation opens with a short list of things to get done. Order three apples. Ask for the total. Each one ticks off the moment you actually do it, and nothing is scripted, so the tick is proof you got there yourself. It is also how you know you are finished, which a chat window that just keeps going never tells you. Every turn is spoken You cannot type your way through this one. Your AI partner answers what you actually said, not what a script was expecting. Feedback from your teacher after every chat When a conversation ends, Teacher Mia goes back over what you said and gives you up to three short tips: a mistake worth fixing, a more natural way to put something, or what you got right. It is the note a tutor would give you, after every conversation instead of once a week. A way out when you freeze A few suggested lines are always sitting there. Play one to hear how it should sound, say it yourself, or translate it first if you are not sure what it means. When the thing you want to say is not among them, type that in your own language and get it back in the language you are learning, without leaving the conversation. Tap any word and understand it in context The word gets explained right where it sits, in the sense the sentence is actually using, rather than the one a dictionary happens to list first. If it was the whole sentence that got away from you, that is a tap as well. Build your own scenario Need something the courses do not cover? Describe the situation and ConvoLive builds it. Ask your partner's father for their hand in marriage. Complain about a hotel room. Compliment a quiche. If you are going to have to say it, you can practice it here first. Who it is for Beginners who want to speak from day one. Intermediate learners who can read a language but freeze in person. Travellers with a trip already booked. Anyone who finished a streak-based app and still cannot hold a conversation. Languages Practice languages: English, Spanish, French, Japanese, Italian, German, Portuguese, Mandarin Chinese and Korean, with more coming. Interface languages: English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Russian, Turkish, Indonesian and Hindi.

Tell it your goal and it writes a phased, week-by-week plan. Details like how much time you have can be added in chat later, and the plan adjusts. ■ Every lesson sits just above your level Grammar, vocabulary, reading, listening and speaking, one block at a time. Accuracy and time spent shape the difficulty and length of the next lesson. Words and grammar points due for review are woven into lessons before you forget them. ■ Miss a question, get it explained in your language Explanations come in your language. Still unsure? Ask the tutor right there — "why an, not the?", "why would, if it's the future?" — and keep asking until it clicks. The mistake notebook keeps the question, the answer, the why and the whole conversation, with similar questions to practice as often as you like. ■ Listening and speaking Listening uses natural multi-speaker dialogues. Speaking records you reading aloud and scores pronunciation and intonation (recordings are scored, not stored). ■ Progress you can see A six-skill radar, phase completion, study days, streaks and badges. Parents get a weekly report and a PIN-protected guardian space. ■ Price Everything is free for the first 30 days. Verdict
The clearest difference is rating: KAI Tutor at 5.0 against ConvoLive's 4.6. ConvoLive's advantage is update cadence (every 4 days vs fortnightly) and ratings volume (41 vs 2). On price, ads, in-app purchases and monetization model there is nothing between them.
Scored on Price · Rating · Positive reviews · Number of ratings · Update frequency · Ads · In-app purchases · Monetization · Best chart rank · Devices · Requires iOS
Both are free to download. ConvoLive sells 2 in-app purchases, starting at $3.99 per month and KAI Tutor sells 2 in-app purchases, starting at $12.99 per month. Whichever you choose, the download price is not the number that matters.
KAI Tutor holds the better App Store score, 5.0 against 4.6. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: ConvoLive has 41 ratings behind it against 2, so its average is the more settled of the two.
ConvoLive ships an update every 4 days, KAI Tutor fortnightly. The most recent releases landed on October 30, 2026 and October 23, 2026 respectively.
