SurfMap rates the surf for your level at more than 5,000 spots around the world. For each spot, it shows you the best hours to go and tells you why. RATED FOR YOUR LEVEL • Tell SurfMap if you're a beginner, an intermediate or an advanced surfer, and every hour of the week gets a rating for you. • Each rating gives its reason in plain words, like "Ideal size for your level" or "Too much wind". • When the tide makes a spot dangerous, a warning sign shows next to its rating. • Rate your sessions and the AI adds a personal score that predicts how much you'll enjoy each hour. It runs on your iPhone and learns only from your own sessions. MAKE EACH SPOT YOURS • Tell SurfMap which tides work at your spot, which ones are dangerous and how big the waves really get there, and the ratings take it into account. • Save your favorite spots. Around 6:30 pm, SurfMap tells you if one of them looks good tomorrow, and it stays quiet when nothing is worth the trip. • Home Screen widgets show the spot you pick, or the closest spot wherever you are. FIND WHERE TO SURF • See which spots around you, or which of your favorites, look good today, tomorrow, this weekend or later in the week. • Hourly graphs show the waves, wind, tide and weather. Drag across the day to check any hour. • The nearby forecast shows seven days for every spot around you. Open the week in landscape, or compare two spots side by side. • Search spots, towns and guides by the name locals use or the one travelers know. WHERE THE FORECAST COMES FROM • Waves, wind and weather come from global wave and weather models, refreshed twice a day for the next seven days. The ratings are SurfMap's own reading of them. • Tides are predicted for each spot from its own tidal constants, the same method behind printed tide tables. 16 SURF GUIDES • The guides cover Ericeira, Peniche, the Algarve, Hossegor, both sides of the Basque Country, Galicia, Asturias, Cornwall, the west coast of Ireland, Fuerteventura, Taghazout, Bali, the Mentawai Islands, Siargao and Sri Lanka. • Each guide says which spot suits your level, the tide that makes it work and the hazards to watch out for. ASK SIRI • "Hey Siri, does it surf today in Huntington Beach with SurfMap?" Siri answers with your rating and the best window, and a tap opens the spot. • With Apple Intelligence, ask SurfMap anything, like "Is tomorrow better than today at Huntington Beach?" Siri questions need iOS 26. APPLE WATCH • Track your session from your wrist, with no phone in the water. The watch counts your waves, and notices missed waves and wipeouts too. • Follow your heart rate, calories and paddle distance live, and keep the GPS track. If your watch runs out of battery, the session isn't lost. • The watch shows conditions and tide for your spots, and its complications can follow the closest spot. YOUR SURF LOG • Every session goes into your log with its conditions and the board you rode, and each month gets its own recap page. • Share a spot's forecast, a session or a whole month as an image. • Your profile keeps your records and a stamp for each new spot and each new country. • Surf workouts go to Apple Health and count toward your rings. SurfMap has no ads. Please note: All features in SurfMap require a subscription. Subscriptions renew automatically unless cancelled at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. Less scrolling. More surfing! The daily dawn-patroller, weekend longboarder, or surfer packing for a dream trip all want the same thing: perfect waves. But finding them shouldn't feel like a chore. The traditional way of checking the surf forces you to switch from spot to spot, loading forecast after forecast, trying to piece the entire coast together in your head. Just try doing all that manual digging when you're rushing to catch a quick wave before work, or when you finally get a free afternoon and just want to get in the water. It gets even tougher when you travel. You land in a new part of the world, ready to surf, but face a wall of research just trying to figure out where to score on any given day. WaveWise is a modern surf app built to eliminate forecast overload. Instead of making you inspect every break individually, WaveWise aggregates and ranks the entire coast for you. It does the heavy lifting so you can instantly spot the ideal windows and get into the lineup faster. You can download WaveWise completely free and immediately start planning your sessions without the hassle. Why Surfers Choose WaveWise: • The Whole Coast at a Glance Stop switching back and forth between spots. The WaveWise Dashboard automatically gathers all the breaks near you and ranks them based on live conditions. Open the app, see the standout options immediately, and know exactly where the surf is cleanest without the endless scrolling. • The Ultimate Session Planner Move from just checking the surf to actually planning your week. The Session Planner maps out upcoming surf windows chronologically, showing you exactly when the waves will peak throughout the day or week. Best of all, it coordinates directly with your personalization options. You can dial in your specific skill level, preferred wave height, and minimum quality bar, ensuring you only see the chronological windows that actually match your style. • Forecasts That Finally Make Sense Raw ocean numbers can be incredibly cryptic. WaveWise replaces the confusion with intuitive, descriptive badges that instantly translate complex swell angles and wind speeds into plain English. By mapping raw data directly to real-world surfer experiences in the water, the hourly forecast actually teaches you how to read the ocean like a local. • Live Global Tide Tracking True comprehensiveness means having your coastal data update in real time. WaveWise features live, up-to-date tide tracking for surf spots all around the world. You get precise tide windows baked right into the interface for any break on the planet, saving you from hunting down obscure local tables just to know when a spot is about to turn on. • Global Coverage and Spot Discovery When you travel to a new coastline or just want to break out of your local routine, finding where to go is exhausting. WaveWise features complete global coverage, serving as the ultimate discovery tool by letting you see all the surf spots near your current location in one single glance. It completely opens up the map so you can safely explore uncrowded setups anywhere on earth and confidently find your next favorite wave. Go Pro for the Ultimate Edge Upgrade to unlock the full power of the app and plan your surf schedule with confidence. • Full 7-Day Forecasts Spot major swells an entire week early. • Advanced Session Planning View chronological window matching across the full 7-day outlook. • Extended Search Radius Expand your boundaries to find hidden windows further up and down the coast. • Zero Distractions A clean, lightning-fast interface with absolutely no ads. And more... Download WaveWise today and become the envy of your surf crew who are still digging through forecasts one by one while you're already waxed up and paddling out! Verdict

The call

The clearest difference is monetization model: WaveWise at freemium against SurfMap's subscription. WaveWise also leads on iOS requirement (15.0 vs 18.0). SurfMap's advantage is ads (none vs shown) and review sentiment (75% vs 50%). On price, rating, ratings volume and update cadence there is nothing between them.

Scored on Price · Rating · Positive reviews · Number of ratings · Update frequency · Ads · In-app purchases · Monetization · Best chart rank · Devices · Requires iOS

CostPrice · In-app purchases · Ads · Monetization

Both are free to download. SurfMap sells 4 in-app purchases, starting at $1.99 per 7 days and WaveWise sells 2 in-app purchases, starting at $4.99 per month. Whichever you choose, the download price is not the number that matters.

ReceptionRating · Positive reviews · Number of ratings

WaveWise holds the better App Store score, 4.7 against 4.5. Both are backed by a comparable volume of ratings — 40 and 30 respectively. Written reviews complicate that: 75% of SurfMap's written reviews are positive against 50% of WaveWise's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.

UpkeepUpdate frequency

SurfMap ships an update every 6 days, WaveWise weekly. The most recent releases landed on October 30, 2026 and October 24, 2026 respectively.
