RowBeat

Requires an Apple Music subscription. RowBeat builds playlists from Apple Music where every song's beat lands on the stroke rate you choose, and plays them while you row. Real music, not gym music. Rowing to music you love beats rowing to generic gym music. The hard part is finding the songs: a track is only worth rowing to if its beat lands on the rate you are holding, and there is no way to search for music by tempo. RowBeat does that part for you. THREE TAPS TO A WORKOUT 1. Set the row. A stroke rate from 18 to 38 SPM and a length from 5 to 60 minutes. Row straight through, or as intervals with a rest between tracks. 2. Pick the sound. Sixteen genres and seven eras, in any combination. Exclude explicit tracks if you like. 3. Row it. A ten-second count gets you on the machine before the first beat. Then one big target stroke-rate number and controls you can reach mid-stroke. Not sure what to pick? Tap Surprise Me and RowBeat chooses two to four genres for you, shows you what it chose, and builds. A BEAT YOU CAN ACTUALLY ROW TO Almost no music is written at rowing speed, so you do not take a stroke on every beat. A 100 BPM track is a good 25 SPM row: one stroke every four beats. Every song in your playlist is matched to your stroke rate and shows the rate it was matched to, so you can see the shape of the workout before you start. SHAPE THE WORKOUT Choose the order your stroke rates arrive in: ladder up, ladder down, pyramid, waves or shuffle, or drag the list into your own order. Tap a cover to hear a 30-second preview. Swap one track for another at the same stroke rate, or swap the whole lot, without rebuilding. SWAP A SONG MID-ROW If a song's beat isn't landing, tap the swap button on the player and RowBeat plays another at about the same stroke rate. A song you swap away stays out of later playlists until you clear the list in Settings. FRESH PLAYLISTS Anything you rowed to in the last month sits out of your next playlist. Make that one week, two weeks or three months in Settings. CONCEPT2 ROWERG AND SKIERG, IF YOU HAVE ONE Connect a Concept2 PM5 over Bluetooth and the player shows what the monitor shows: time, distance, your actual stroke rate and both 500 m splits, read straight off the PM5 so they always agree with the screen in front of you. With a PM5 connected, RowBeat can also offer the swap itself when your stroke rate stays well off a song's beat. The SkiErg works too; ski stroke rates run a little higher, so set the range to suit. Without an erg you get one big target stroke-rate number instead. NEW TO ROWING TO MUSIC? Rhythm Rowing, a short tutorial in the app, teaches the 1-2-3-4 count with an animated rower and an optional buzz on the beat. WHAT YOU NEED An iPhone, an Apple Music subscription, and an internet connection. A Concept2 PM5 is optional; a PM3 or PM4 has no Bluetooth. No account, no sign-in, no password. YOUR PRIVACY No account, no analytics, no ads, no tracking. Your settings, your play history (kept up to three months) and the songs you swapped away stay on your iPhone, and deleting the app deletes them. Full policy at rowbeatapp.com/privacy.html.
