Protocol Zero is the first Active Sleep Improvement based on Research It’s a system that gives you a clear, personalized daily plan so you know exactly what to do to sleep better starting tonight. New: Protocol Zero now includes sleep sounds you can play at night, including white noise, brown noise, rain, and calming audio. Use them alongside your personalized nightly routine to unwind faster and fall asleep more easily. YOUR PERSONAL SLEEP COACH Unlike most apps that only track your sleep, Protocol Zero guides you through a daily schedule designed to reset your body clock and improve your sleep quality. Each day, you get specific actions that make a real difference: - Set a consistent wake time and get morning light exposure to reset your internal clock and help you feel alert during the day - Follow precise caffeine cutoffs so late-day coffee or tea never interferes with your deep sleep - Activate wind-down mode in the evening, which blocks distracting apps and helps your mind and body relax before bed - Practice science-backed techniques from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I), proven to help you fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer HOW IT WORKS Your body depends on a 24-hour internal clock to regulate sleep. Protocol Zero anchors your day around two key signals: when you wake up and when you get morning light. The app then schedules your caffeine, meals, exercise, and wind-down activities into optimal time windows. This structure helps you build habits that make you naturally tired at bedtime, so you fall asleep more easily and wake up refreshed. No more lying awake wondering what went wrong. No more generic sleep tips that never stick. Protocol Zero gives you a clear, automated plan that builds lasting habits for deep, restorative sleep. SIMPLE, SCIENCE-BACKED, AND ACTIONABLE Protocol Zero combines the most effective techniques from CBT-I the gold standard for sleep improvement with modern behavioral science. Research shows that tracking your habits and making targeted changes leads to real, lasting results. We make these techniques simple to follow, so you can start seeing improvements right away. WHO IT’S FOR Protocol Zero is designed for healthy adults who want to optimize their sleep. It is an educational tool, not a medical device, and is not intended to diagnose or treat sleep disorders. If you suspect you have insomnia, sleep apnea, or another medical condition, consult a physician. Stop guessing about your sleep. Most migraine trackers assume you can fill in a form mid-migraine. MigraineSpy assumes you are having a migraine right now and cannot. It's designed to be simple so you can focus on recovery. Open it and there is one button: Migraine started. Tap it and you are done. Tap End migraine when it passes. Intensity, symptoms, notes and medications are all optional, and you can add them later, or never — the entry is already saved. ONE TAP, NOTHING REQUIRED The only thing MigraineSpy ever needs is a start time. Nothing is mandatory, nothing blocks you, and there is no form to complete before your migraine counts. Elapsed time is worked out from when you started, so an entry survives a force quit, a restart, or a flat battery. SYMPTOMS THAT NEVER BECOME A MIGRAINE Aura on its own. A wave of nausea. A visual disturbance that passes. These get their own kind of entry, so they stay part of your history without being counted as a migraine day and quietly inflating every number you watch. A REAL CALENDAR 1 Month, 30 days, 12 weeks, 20 weeks, 6 months or 12 months, each with a count for that period. Tap any day to see what happened. Intensity runs gold through orange to red, so a bad stretch is visible at a glance. STREAKS IN BOTH DIRECTIONS Days clear, and days in a row. Both matter, and both are there. MEDICATIONS, HONESTLY RECORDED What you took, what you took it for, and whether you noted that it helped, did nothing, or you are not sure. No claims, no scoring — just what you observed. COLOUR THAT GETS OUT OF THE WAY The app can look bright at rest and mute itself the moment a migraine starts. Or stay bright. Or stay calm. There is a dark theme, a light theme, an ultra dim mode for during an attack, and a screen dimmer you can switch on mid-migraine. Lock to portrait is on by default, because a screen that turns when you roll over is the last thing you need. YOUR JOURNAL STAYS ON YOUR DEVICE There is no account, no sign-in, and nothing is sent to a server. Backup and restore are free and always will be — save a file wherever you like, and use it to move everything to a new phone. ONE OPTIONAL PURCHASE PDF export is a one-time purchase: a readable summary of any date range, to keep, print, or take to an appointment. Everything else, including backups, stays free. There is no subscription. MigraineSpy is a personal journal. It does not give medical advice and cannot diagnose or treat anything. If you are worried about your health, talk to a doctor.

Verdict
The clearest difference is monetization model: MigraineSpy at free with in-app purchases against Protocol Zero's subscription. MigraineSpy also leads on ads (none vs shown) and review sentiment (100% vs 67%). Protocol Zero's advantage is ratings volume (182 vs 1) and update cadence (every 4 days vs every 10 days). On price, in-app purchases, device support and iOS requirement there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Protocol Zero sells 5 in-app purchases, starting at $12.99 per month and MigraineSpy sells 4 one-off in-app purchases. Whichever you choose, the download price is not the number that matters.
MigraineSpy holds the better App Store score, 5.0 against 4.7. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Protocol Zero has 182 ratings behind it against 1, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews point the same way: 67% of Protocol Zero's written reviews are positive against 100% of MigraineSpy's.
Protocol Zero ships an update every 4 days, MigraineSpy every 10 days. The most recent releases landed on October 1, 2026 and October 5, 2026 respectively.
