Vocable
Read full descriptionHide full description
Vocable gives you one new word every day, with its meaning and an example, so you can grow your vocabulary without feeling overwhelmed. It is free. There is no account, no subscription, no ads and no tracking. **WHAT YOU GET (ALL FREE)** - A new word every day. It does not repeat until you have seen the whole daily list. - Meaning, an example sentence, and a button to hear the word spoken aloud, using your iPhone's own voice - "Still with you?": an earlier word comes back with just its meaning. Can you name it? Tap "Knew it" or "Forgot" and Vocable decides when to show it again - "Yesterday's Word": a quick recall of the day before - "Already know it": skip a word you already own and get another - A daily streak that counts the day you show up, with a weekly freeze for the day life gets in the way - A short flashcard quiz, ready after you have met five words. Words you get right come back later, and words you miss come back sooner - Achievements to unlock, kept quietly on the Progress tab - Word bundles: 43 themed collections, from Science to Mythology - A Library of every word you have looked up, with search - Reminders at times you choose, and an optional evening note that your streak is safe. Both are off until you turn them on - Works offline: every word the app ships with has its meaning built in - Home Screen and Lock Screen widgets that turn over each day by themselves - iCloud sync across your devices, and an export of your data - Follows your iPhone's text size and light or dark appearance **HOW THE REMINDERS WORK** Vocable uses a simple spaced schedule, kept on your iPhone. A word first comes back 2 days after it was your word of the day. Each time you know it, the gap grows: 7 days, then 30. If you forget it, it returns in 2 days. At most one earlier word is shown per day, the most overdue first. Quiz answers use the same schedule: "Got It" counts as knowing it, "Missed It" as forgetting. This is a light version of spaced repetition, not a full flashcard system, and it does not claim any particular gain in memory. **BUILT DIFFERENT** Vocable is made by one person. There is no analytics SDK watching what you tap, and nothing is sent anywhere unless you choose to email feedback. Your data stays on your device, or in your own iCloud if you have it turned on. The meanings shipped with the app were written for it and have not been taken from a dictionary, so if one reads oddly, please tell me. If you enjoy Vocable and want to say thanks, there is an optional tip jar in Settings. Every feature works the same whether you tip or not.
