Inspired by the Shabbat alerts in Jerusalem, the Shabbos App brings the thrill of Shabbat and Yom Tov arrival to your phone. Music starts 40 minutes before Shabbat and Yom Tov. A Shofar sounds at candle lighting and alerts you with the exact time of Issur Melacha (18 minutes after candle lighting) for over 100,000 cities. Shofar and the Arrival of Shabbat In the times of the Beit HaMikdash, Shabbat was announced publicly. The Gemara (Gemara Shabbat 35b)* describes how the shofar was blown on Friday afternoon: first to call workers in from the fields, then to stop labor in the city, to close shops, and finally to signal the official beginning of Shabbat. These blasts ensured that the entire community entered Shabbat together, prepared and aware — a reminder that Shabbat is not only kept, but welcomed. With Hashem’s help, speedily in our days, may the Beit HaMikdash be built, and may we once again hear the shofar announcing the arrival of Shabbat in Jerusalem.
