Chessboard is a simple chess app for two players to play chess together. Play without ads, without an account, and without public matchmaking. Enjoy classic chess anytime — offline on one device or online by inviting each other. The chess app allows only legal moves and supports all important chess rules, including castling, en passant, and pawn promotion. It also includes Antichess, where captures are mandatory and the goal is to lose all pieces or have no legal moves. Ideal for beginners, kids, and experienced players who want to play together. CHESS ON ONE DEVICE Play chess with two people on a single device — a classic chess experience without a physical board. Perfect as travel chess, for on the go, at a café, or at home – no physical chessboard or pieces needed. CHESS ON TWO DEVICES Connect two devices and play chess on separate screens. The connection works by invitation, for example via an invite link you share once using a messenger or another method. After that, you can invite each other directly from within the app without having to resend the link every time. An internet connection is required. Suitable for games in the same room or over longer distances. GAME PROGRESS The current chess game is saved automatically. All moves remain visible, and the game can be continued at any time. FAQ Is this chess app suitable for kids? Yes, the app is kid-friendly and easy to use. Is there a computer opponent or chess AI? No. Chessboard focuses exclusively on games between two people you choose to play with — there are no random opponents or public matches. Does the chess app require internet access? Only for playing on two devices. Playing on one device works completely offline. Are there ads or registration? No. No ads, no login, no account.
RuneChess
Read full descriptionHide full description
A chess puzzle with no opponent — only precision. Rune-coins lie on the board. Each one needs an exact number of attacks: no more, no fewer. Your task is to place the pieces you are given so that every rune gets its due. HOW IT WORKS Pieces strike by ordinary chess rules, and a line of attack stops at the first piece it meets. The rook holds the ranks and files, the bishop the diagonals, the knight leaps over anything in the way, the queen combines rook and bishop. The solution falls out of those rules: one attack too many spoils it exactly as surely as one too few. 165 LEVELS Five of them teach you the board and the pieces. After that come Moonlit Garden and Starlit Observatory, where several kinds of piece have to work together and the hints run out. STARS AND RANKS Up to three stars a level: three for an exact solution with no hints. Stars are never spent for nothing. They raise your rank in the achievements and unlock looks — your own table, your own pieces, your own coins. DAILY CHALLENGE A new puzzle every day, separate from the campaign. NOTHING YOU DID NOT ASK FOR The game works without an internet connection. There is no registration, no name or email is asked for, and nothing is sold for real money. The coins on the board are part of the puzzle, not a currency: there is no wagering and no gambling in RuneChess. Advertising is voluntary only: you may watch a video for an extra hint, or to skip a level you are stuck on. Nothing else is hidden behind one.

Verdict
The clearest difference is ads: Chessboard at none against RuneChess's shown. Chessboard also leads on update cadence (every 4 days vs fortnightly) and iOS requirement (15.6 vs 17.0). On price, in-app purchases and device support there is nothing between them.
