Eating well shouldn't require a nutrition degree. Most healthy-eating advice asks you to learn everything at once — macros, calories, labels, portion sizes — and then keep it up every day, forever. Most people give up before they start. Not because they don't care, but because they have no idea where to begin. So begin with one rule: no added sugar. It's the single change that quietly removes most ultra-processed food from your life without you having to learn anything else first. Follow that one rule and the rest reveals itself. SugarFlag exists to make that one rule easy to keep. HOW IT WORKS Take a photo of any product — the front of the pack, the back, whatever you can see. AI reads what's there and tells you whether sugar was added. 1. Open SugarFlag 2. Point your camera at the product 3. Take the photo, or choose one from your library 4. Get a clear answer in seconds No barcode to find. No database to match. No hunting for an ingredients list printed in 6-point type. ONE CLEAR ANSWER No calorie counting. No macro tracking. No score out of 100. Just: - No Added Sugar - Contains Added Sugar Plus a short explanation naming exactly which ingredients are the added sugars, so you learn as you go. ADDED SUGAR HIDES It appears under dozens of names: glucose syrup, maltodextrin, dextrose, invert sugar, barley malt, fruit juice concentrate, rice syrup, molasses, cane juice, and many more. Even products labelled "natural", "high protein" or "no refined sugar" often contain it. That is the whole problem. You cannot follow a rule you cannot verify. SugarFlag verifies it for you. YOUR SCAN HISTORY Every scan is saved, so you can look back at what you have checked, remember which brands passed, and shop faster next time. Sugar Counter A simple app for tracking your daily refined sugar intake in grams. All local. No cloud. No ads. Free. Made for anyone with a modern iOS device. Created by an MD/PhD focused on vascular health. Track refined and added sugars from packaging quickly—without fumbling with barcode scanners. Fast data entry with clear visuals serves as a daily reminder to reduce refined sugar intake. The Science: Why Sugar Matters The modern diet is saturated with "hidden" sugars—specifically high-fructose corn syrup and sucrose—that bypass normal satiety signals and place an immense metabolic load on the liver. Unlike glucose, which can be used by every cell in the body, fructose is primarily processed in the liver, where high doses can trigger lipogenesis (fat production), insulin resistance, and chronic inflammation. Research highlights the urgency: Metabolic Syndrome: Excessive refined sugar intake is a primary driver of metabolic syndrome, independent of total caloric intake (Lustig et al., 2012, Nature). Cardiovascular Risk: High-sugar diets are significantly associated with increased cardiovascular disease mortality (Yang et al., 2014, JAMA Internal Medicine). The 5% Rule: The WHO strongly recommends reducing free sugar intake to less than 10%—and ideally 5%—of total energy intake to prevent non-communicable diseases. Sugar Counter helps you stay within these evidence-based limits - simple fast app, all local data, simple CSV export.
