Syrupy

Several years ago, my wife and I started doing hobby-ish maple syrup production (~100 trees). Being an old software developer, I decided that instead of making paper notes throughout the season, I’d come up with an iPhone app that tracks things for me (because software developers have never seen something that they didn’t want to write an application for). Syrupy contains functionality that I (and some others!) find useful: - Monitor production records, sap collection volume, brix, and syrup grades over time. - Track your maple trees on an interactive map. - Record tree details including diameter, spiles, and health status. - Organize trees into groups and automatically calculate path distances to optimize your collection routes. It's free and I have no intention of trying to make money on this. It’s a fun project where I’ve been able to try things like high-accuracy GPS, route mapping, etc, and I intend for it to remain fun. If it's helpful to you, let me know. Happy tapping!

Know exactly when it's syrup. Maple Syrup Calculator gives you the finish temperature for today's air pressure, corrects hydrometer readings to true Brix, and works out sap, boil time, fuel and bottles. 15 calculators for maple producers, from a backyard pan to a full sugarhouse, and all of them work offline. FINISH TEMPERATURE, CORRECTED FOR TODAY Syrup is done at a fixed number of degrees above the boiling point of water, and that boiling point moves with the weather. A memorized 212 °F or 219 °F is the most common reason a batch finishes thin or thick. Set today's boiling point one of three ways: • Read your phone's barometer, if your phone has one • Type in today's barometric pressure • Enter the boiling point of water you measured yourself Pick your density target (66.0, 66.5 or 66.9 °Brix) and the app tells you the temperature to draw off at. A reading you type in is kept for the rest of the day, and the screen stays awake while you work. FINISHING • Finish temperature, corrected for air pressure • Hydrometer correction: true Brix from a hot or cold test • Thin or thick: how much water to add, or how much more to boil off • Blend batches: where two densities land when you mix them • Sap to syrup: gallons of sap per gallon of syrup, with the corrected Rule of 86 PLANNING • Boil time: hours, fuel and fuel cost for a run, on firewood, propane or fuel oil • RO savings: boiling hours saved by reverse osmosis • Season projection from your tap count • Taps per tree from trunk diameter • Pan capacity: the taps an evaporator keeps up with, or the rig your taps need PACKAGING AND MONEY • Bottle counts: what a batch fills, size by size • Weight: volume to weight and back • Cost and pricing: cost per gallon, break-even per bottle and profit at your price CONFECTIONS • Cook temperatures for maple cream, candy and granulated sugar, corrected for today's pressure • Sugar yield: how much sugar or candy a batch of syrup makes BUILT FOR THE SUGARHOUSE • Works offline: every calculation runs on your phone, with no signal needed • No account and no ads • US units (°F, gallons) or metric (°C, litres) • Results update as you type • Each calculator shows its method and sources: UMaine Extension, Cornell Maple Program, UVM Proctor Maple Research Center, Penn State Extension, UNH Extension and NAMSC PRICING After a short introduction, every calculator needs Maple Syrup Calculator Pro or the Lifetime Unlock.
